Tom Waits - I Don't Wanna Grow Up

Every teen in the history of the world just wants to grow up and become independent. What they seem to miss is that there is a price that has to be paid to be grown up. Everyone wants the good parts of being grown up, independance, self reliance, self direction but no one wants the hard parts, making the final choice and accepting the outcome, bills, responsibility.

I joke with a friend of mine that we must be making adulthood looks so good because all the teenagers around us really seem to want to be grown up. And here is Tom Waits with a song released on his 1992 album Bone Machine about the opposite feeling of not wanting to grow up. A song about seeing the craziness that can be life and wanting to keep things simple.

The more you grow the more you see the complexity of living and that is a burden. Yet, we are the lucky ones who get to grow up and become old. Hopefully with that age comes the strength to carry the burden and the perspective to see the beauty in the complexity.

This song is good for making a wish for time to standstill.

Enjoy!

If you liked this then give the artists Nick Cave and Captain Beefheart a try.
