Sleigh Bells - Where Did You Sleep Last Night

The first time I heard this song was when Nirvana performed it on their 1994 MTV Unplugged episode. As far as I knew, they were the creators of this song but it turns out this song has a very long history going back 100 or more years. The earliest recording was in 1926 by Dock Walsh with a version called "The Pines". I also learned that this song is part of the musical genre of murder ballads. Songs based in the tradition of town criers using songs to share the news of terrible things like murder. Amazing and haunting.

Now here are the Sleigh Bells, with their own version created as part of the soundtrack for the movie "The Rhythm Section". They do a great job of making it their own. I love the deep tone that starts the song of what sounds like a keyboard, then creepy violin sound, and then slight distortion on the vocals. All together fantastic.

This song is good for being paranoid on a dark night.

Enjoy!

If you liked this then give the artists Cults and The Kills a try.
