Patty Loveless - You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive

There was a time when I would go to a music store and just pick up anything that looked interesting and hope for the best. That is how I got a hold of Patty Loveless's 2001 album Mountain Soul. I would normally never have chosen to get this album. I mean, what was an urban Hispanic girl doing picking up a bluegrass album? But I was so happy with it. Patty's voice is so beautiful and told so many deep stories in this album with this one being the most heartbreaking one for me.

To imagine the feeling of hope the person in the song had, thinking that they are moving forward into a new and better life, only to have that hope disappear is just gut-wrenching. I've listened to this song so many times but I cannot help but tear up every time. It's one of those sad songs that reminds me of how lucky I am to be living a life that still has hope in it.

On a more political note, people are fighting to keep the coal mining way of working alive but this song tells me that it is a terrible life. I've yet to come across a song about coal mining that is happy. "Oh, I am a coal miner and I want my children to do this because it is just so great, la, la, la, la, la". I say that coal as an energy source should be replace and that those who are risking themselves for our energy needs be cared for.

Enjoy!

If you liked this then give the artists Billy Strings and Patsy Cline a try.
